Workshops & Labs

1.    Workshop

All the students are given a basic training in various sections like fitting, foundry, sheet metal, smithy, carpentry, plumbing, welding etc.

2.      Fluid Mechanics and Machine Lab

The objective of this laboratory is to study the operating characteristics of hydraulic machines and flow devices. The laboratory is important for Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering students. The major equipment focuses on the study and calibration of gauges, triangular notch, rectangular notch, Orificemeter Venturimeter and determination of Chezy's constant and Darcy's coefficient. In addition the performance test on hydraulic machines like centrifugal pump, Reciprocating pump, Pelton Wheel, Francis turbine and Kaplan turbine are also conducted. Experiments also include the study of stability of floating body, hydraulic ram and experimental determination of frictional head losses in pipes. All the experimental set up are available as self-contained units. Besides there are many helpful laboratory demonstrations.

3.    Machine tools lab

The students are given an excellent opportunity to familiarize themselves and acquire hands-on experience in machine tools like Lathe, Shaper, Milling Machine, Drilling Machine, Cylindrical & Surface Grinding Machines etc..Students get trained on performing high precision jobs in machine tools lab. The lab is also equipped with  lathes and latest welding machines. High precision work on lathe are performed by students along with precision grinding and metal removing process.

4.    Cad/cam lab

The Mechanical Department of VISAT, offers state–of-the-art facilities for aspiring engineering graduates. The CAD/CAM/CAE lab of our department includes almost 60 workstations with support for advanced CAD/CAE applications, along with the most competent teaching faculty. It is one of the best CAD/CAE Labs, among the various colleges in Ernakulam . Industry standard software's like Autodesk AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor and SOLID EDGE  are introduced to students. Autodesk AutoCAD is used to create technical drawings of machine parts. Autodesk Inventor is used to create 3D models of machine parts and assembly. SOLID EDGE  is used for stress analysis and thermal analysis of machine parts. Students are given a two step course on the above programs. S3 Students are introduced to 2D drawings in Autodesk AutoCAD and part modeling in inventor. While S6 students are introduced to part assembly in inventor and analysis in SOLID EDGE  . This two step course help students get accustomed to the major CAD/CAM/CAE software's used in the design industry.

5.   Heat engines lab

The Heat  Engine lab, which is a vital part of mechanical engineering curriculum, is intended to enble students to gain a deep understanding the working of IC engines by analyzing performance with thermodynamics principles. It contains fully functional and competent engines and other apparatus such as valve timing apparatus, port timing apparatus, calorimeters, flash and fire point apparatus, etc. With the help of single cylinder and multicylinder petrol and diesel engines the students will get an overall idea about their working and performance. By conducting heat balance test the students will get a clear concept of energy distribution occurring in an engine. The demonstrated cut section of four stroke and two stroke engines will help to know the basic functioning of an IC engine. To determine the properties of lubricating oil, flash and fire points test as well as Redwood Viscometer tests are also conducted. We also have bomb calorimeters to find out the calorific values of solid, liquid and gaseous fuels.
